Driving Lessons Explained
So you are starting the journey!
So you have jumped off that skateboard and into the car, here is an overview of driving lessons and what you need to know. To help you on your way there are some basic things you need to know as you embark on your journey to learn to drive.
Also the internet is full of information and advice so here are some basics.
For example you must hold a valid provisional driving licence for Great Britain.
Minimum age you can take a test
You can take your theory test once your provisional licence becomes valid. Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday. However you can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday.
Safety first - Use a qualified Approved Driving Instructor
While you can have lessons with family and friends unfortunately they are unlikely to have the skills to teach you, we go through rigorous training to become Instructors. Our goal is to teach you how to drive safely, what to look out for, have confidence and enjoying it too (enjoyment is often half the battle).
How long will it take?
The golden question and very difficult to answer, the best thing to do is book an assessment lesson, this can be part of a package, or a single lesson (usually 2 hours), where I can assess how you are as a learner, but equally you can assess me to find out if I am the right Instructor for you, it goes both ways. You will drive the car on your first lesson, unlike some others who chat only during the first lesson!
Driving test theory
You need to book your driving theory test and this can be done straight away, I recommend you buy at minimum a copy of the highway code, or download the app, there are also a lot of practice apps available too, when we meet we can discuss some options. I recommend this 4 in 1 app as a great starting point.
Study, then study more, you may as well as you do not want to attempt it more than once.
It is fairly straight forward, you have 57 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. you need to score minimum 43 out of 50.
There are 15 video clips lasting 1 minute each, there will be at least 1 hazard that you need to identify, you score points based on when you spot the hazard, you will need to score minimum 44 out of 75. further details can be found here
